Winona Ryder - Winona Lauro Horowitz - was born in Winona Minnesota. Her parents named their daughter in honor of her hometown. Michel Horowitz was her father as well as Cynthia Palmer, his mother, were both authors and editors. Ryder's father was born into a Jewish family. Ryder considers her self Jewish. Ryder has also a half-sister named Sunyata Jubal. Ryder's younger sister is Uria. Ryder's parents moved her along with her siblings in Mendocino County California when Ryder reached seven. They didn't have electricity. Ryder, who was an avid reader aged 12 became a book worm since Ryder had no access to television. Ryder aged 12 was enrolled in the American Conservatory Theatre for acting classes in 1983. Lucas the film, which was released in 1986 which was her first big character. Ryder was only fifteen when she landed the role. Ryder was bullied at her high school. Ryder hoped her acting career would change this. However, that didn't happen. The actress continued to chase her dreams. In 1988, she got her biggest break with Tim Burton's Beetlejuice. Ryder continued playing characters that made a splash in various films. In 1993, Ryder was in the running twice for Academy Awards.
